The period from to was marked by several losses. The extreme and fantastic example is the hero of The Beast in the Jungle, who is finally crushed by the realization that his fate is to be the man in the whole world to whom nothing at all is to happen. Beginning in the second period, but most noticeably in the third, he increasingly abandoned direct statement in favour of frequent double negatives, and complex descriptive imagery.
Having agreed to his conditions, the governess never saw the gentleman again. The emphasis on old and mysterious buildings throughout the novella reinforces this motif.
